At A+ Tutoring, we pride ourselves on the success stories of our students. Caitlin Keough, a senior at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, exemplifies the dedication, hard work, and resilience that define a successful student. With the help of her tutor, Patrick Halkett, Caitlin navigated the challenges of standardized test preparation, honing the skills necessary to boost her score an impressive 180 points! Her journey is an inspiring one, and we are excited to share her story.

A+ Tutoring: The Right Choice for Caitlin

When Caitlin and her family began looking for tutoring options, they turned to A+ Tutoring, drawn by its positive reviews and convenient location near their home. “The location was close to my house, and there were positive reviews on Google,” Caitlin recalls. The convenience of proximity, combined with A+’s reputation for results, made it the right choice for Caitlin’s academic needs.

As Caitlin focused on preparing for the SAT, she worked closely with Patrick, who helped her develop both the skills and strategies needed to tackle standardized testing with confidence.

Effective Collaboration: Caitlin’s Approach to Learning

Patrick had nothing but praise for Caitlin’s work ethic and intellectual abilities. “She is an incredibly bright and diligent student,” Patrick says. “She synthesizes new information/techniques with speed and precision. Caitlin’s upbeat attitude and sincere engagement with the material also make her incredibly easy to work with.” Caitlin’s drive and enthusiasm for learning made her an ideal student, and their collaboration was a perfect match.

A key factor in Caitlin’s progress was her active involvement in choosing the areas of focus for each session. Patrick allowed Caitlin the autonomy to decide which material or practice problems to tackle, fostering a sense of ownership over her learning. “I think this helped her feel like she was really involved in her own education and made her feel more confident about what she did/did not know,” Patrick explains. This approach, combined with Caitlin’s ability to identify her own weaknesses, allowed them to address challenges systematically and effectively.

Overcoming Challenges: Time Management and Test-Taking Strategies

Despite Caitlin’s strong academic performance, she faced some challenges in the standardized test preparation process. One such challenge was managing time effectively, particularly with the math section. Caitlin found herself getting stuck on difficult problems, which sometimes led to spending too much time on them and not having enough time for easier questions.

Patrick worked with Caitlin to develop strategies for managing this common pitfall. “I think that, because Caitlin is such a strong student, there were times when she would opt to solve the problem by hand,” Patrick notes. While doing math by hand can be a valuable approach in many cases, on standardized tests like the SAT, it’s often more efficient to use other techniques or tools.

To help Caitlin overcome this challenge, Patrick introduced her to new ways to use the Desmos calculator that would allow her to solve problems more quickly and efficiently. “Once Caitlin understood the algebraic method behind the problem, I would show her how to graph/analyze the math visually to find the answer more quickly,” Patrick explains. This approach helped Caitlin save time and focus on completing as many questions as possible, rather than getting bogged down by particularly tricky problems.

Building Confidence: Embracing Mistakes and Growing from Them

Caitlin’s approach to standardized test preparation was grounded in consistent practice and learning from mistakes. “A+ helped me feel comfortable making mistakes and building strengths out of them,” Caitlin reflects. This mindset of embracing mistakes as part of the learning process was crucial in helping Caitlin build confidence and improve her performance.

With the support of her tutor, Caitlin learned to navigate difficult questions without letting frustration take over. “For reading questions, if the passage is super long and doesn’t make sense, don’t hesitate to just keep moving,” Caitlin recalls, quoting one of the best pieces of advice she received from Patrick. By internalizing this strategy, Caitlin was able to stay focused and avoid wasting time on questions that would only hinder her progress.

Looking Ahead: Caitlin’s Future Goals

Caitlin has big plans for her future. After completing her studies at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, she plans to attend Dartmouth College to major in Environmental Studies. “I hope to work in creating environmental policy or perhaps to work for the EPA,” Caitlin shares, noting her long-term goals of entering law school and working on critical environmental issues. Caitlin’s dedication to making a positive impact on the world is an inspiring example of the power of education and determination.

Advice for Other Students: Practice and Perseverance

Caitlin’s journey offers valuable insights for other students preparing for standardized tests. “Practice is key! It can be tedious and annoying, but the biggest thing that would get me on test day would be questions I was unfamiliar with that I would end up getting psyched out about and spending all of my time on,” Caitlin advises. By practicing regularly and staying focused on familiar question types, Caitlin was able to maximize her strengths and minimize her weaknesses on test day.

Caitlin’s advice also highlights the importance of managing test anxiety and staying calm in the face of challenging questions. With the right preparation and mindset, any student can approach standardized testing with confidence.

Celebrating Caitlin’s Success

Caitlin’s story is a testament to the hard work, perseverance, and collaboration that lead to academic success. With the guidance of her tutor, Patrick, Caitlin not only honed her test-taking strategies but also gained the confidence and skills necessary for her future endeavors. As she moves forward to Dartmouth and beyond, we at A+ Tutoring wish her all the best in her academic and career pursuits. Her future is bright, and we are proud to have been part of her journey.
