As most educators know, one out of every seven Americans
cannot read, write or spell. And while students from
elementary school through college lack basic literacy
skills, this problem does not just affect our children;
some 27 million adults are functionally illiterate as
well.
Although it's easy to blame the educational system,
overcrowded classrooms and dwindling budgets for this
problem, the fact is that many people, regardless of
their age, have not been able to acquire reading and
writing skills because their learning needs have never
been properly assessed. The majority of these people
are subject to a core deficit at the most basic level
of language skill: that of phonologic coding. They have
never acquired what so many of us take for granted -
an internalized ability to analyze the structure of
words in English and apply their understanding of that
structure when reading and spelling.
Whether caused by dyslexia or some other language-based
learning difficulty, a late introduction to English
or over-reliance on whole language programs, this deficit
must be corrected by direct, multisensory, structured
language teaching.
The Wilson Reading System is a twelve-step reading
and writing program. It is a complete curriculum for
teaching decoding and encoding (spelling) beginning
with phoneme segmentation. WRS directly teaches the
structure of words so that students master the coding
system for reading and spelling. Unlike other programs
that overwhelm the student with rules, the language
system of English is presented in a systematic and cumulative
manner so that it is manageable. It provides an organized,
sequential system with extensive controlled text to
help teachers implement a multisensory structured language
program.
The basic purpose of the Wilson Reading System is to
teach students fluent decoding and encoding skills to
the level of mastery. From the beginning steps of the
program, it also includes sight word instruction, vocabulary,
oral expressive language development and comprehension.
Throughout the program, a ten-part lesson plan, designed
to be very interactive between teacher and student,
is followed. The lessons progress from easier to more
challenging tasks for decoding and then spelling. The
system ends with fluency and comprehension work.
